A student debate will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13 in
Chapman Hall Room 202 at the University of Mount Union. This year’s
debate topic is “Resolved: Conservative Austerity Budgets with
Substantial Cuts in Federal and State Budgets are Both Economically
Harmful and Morally Wrong.”
University President Richard F. Giese will provide the introduction.
Dr. Lee Gray, professor of geology, will serve as moderator. Dr. Rodney
F. Dick, chair of the Department of English and associate professor of
English, will serve as chief judge and chief scorer. The opening song
will be performed by freshman Elizabeth Wheeler of Minerva, OH. Judges
for the debate will include Robert Garland, director of the libraries;
Theresa Davis, professor of history; Dr. Fendrich Clark, assistant
professor of communication and Dr. Francis Schortgen, professor of
political science and international studies.
Participants debating for the solution will include junior
international studies major Daniil Kravchenko of Hartville, OH; freshman
Breanna Geraci of Avon Lake, OH; freshman Thomas Swank of Sebina, OH;
and senior political science major Matthew Fahey of Akron, OH.
Participants arguing against the solution include Edmond Jaber (Walsh
University), Adam Stilgenbauer (Walsh University), freshman Andrew Rojek
of North Canton, OH and junior international studies major Elizabeth
Haavisto of Massillon, OH.
Prizes will be awarded to the winning students. Admission is free and
the event is open to the public. The debate is organized annually by
Dr. Santosh C. Saha, professor of history at Mount Union.
