The University of Mount Union’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion
will host a series of events during February in commemoration of Black
History Month.
Events will include the following:
- Tuesday, February 12: Leslie Frost-Kitchen '00: 'From Spirituals to Modern Day Gospels', 6 p.m., Dewald Chapel
Frost-Kitchen, a 2000 Mount Union graduate, is a first grade teacher
in the Youngstown City School District. She actively participates
in the drama, children’s and music ministries at Rising Star Baptist
Church. She will present soul-stirring songs from the African American
tradition. This presentation will include selections ranging from Negro
Spirituals to modern gospel selections. The audience will be taken on a
musical journey that will be both educational and entertaining.
- Thursday, February 14: The Underground Railroad, 6 p.m., Perry Sippo Branch Library in Massillon (transportation provided)
- Historical presenter Paul Goebbel will share the exciting story of
brave men and women who risked their personal finances and freedom to
help an enslaved race. Only 12 spots are available-first come, first

- Thursday, February 21: Black History Month Keynote Speaker Dr. Charleyse Pratt, 7 p.m., Presser Recital Hall
Pratt serves as director of the Learning Communities Programs and
Partnerships at Cleveland State University. In this role, she serves as
director for the Cleveland Transfer Connection, a partnership with
Cuyahoga Community College’s Metro-Campus where students are able to
begin their undergraduate studies at Tri-C to earn an associate’s degree
and then transfer to Cleveland State to complete the four-year
baccalaureate degree.
Pratt was elected president of Cleveland State University’s Black
Faculty and Staff organization for the tern 2012-2014. In addition, she
participates as a member of the President’s Advisory Committee on the
Role and Status of Women and the University’s Retention and School
Success subcommittee.
