in time for Veterans Day, the University of Mount Union will present a
collaborative piece by the Department of Theatre and the Department of
Music, Ocean’s Apart, opening November 15 in the Dewald Chapel.
Based in part on the stories of Vietnam veteran and theatre director Michael J. Arndt, Ocean’s Apart is
a play written by Kevin P. Kern, assistant professor of theatre, with
songs chosen by Dr. Grant Cook, associate professor of music and
director of choral activities.
Staged in vignettes with accompanying songs by the concert choir at Mount Union, Oceans Apart
tells the story of loved ones separated by war who strive to stay in
contact through letters. The audience follows three pairs of family
members from three separate wars: WWII, Vietnam and Afghanistan. The
action flows seamlessly between the stories, punctuated by songs from
the 50-member concert choir.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 15 and 2 p.m. Sunday,
November 17. General admission tickets are $7 or $5 for seniors.
Veterans receive free admission to the show, as do Mount Union students,
faculty and staff members, though ticket reservation is required by
calling (330) 821-2565. Proceeds from the performances will be donated
to the Wounded Warrior Project.
Dewald Chapel is located on the University of Mount Union’s campus across from Mount Union Stadium.
